It had been a dream of Thad Nichols (known to everyone as Nick) to own and operate a farm equipment dealership. In addition to his background in farming, he worked for several years as a territory manager for the New Idea Equipment Company. In order to gain experience within a dealership, he worked for two years as a salesman for Franz Farm Equipment in Beatrice.
In 1966, franchises for Massey Ferguson and Minneapolis Moline became available in Geneva. Nick and Loraine (his wife) moved to Geneva and Nick's Farm Store became a reality. The business began in a building that was originally built by John Wilkins as a "spec" facility for grain storage. This building was transformed into a retail space. Besides Nick and Loraine, the very first employees included Larry and Nancy (Nick and Loraine's daughter) Eichelberger, Harold Cooksey, Jim Quick and Clarence Boo.
Sadly, Nick passed away in 1969. Loraine, Larry, and Nancy decided to take on the challenge of moving on with the business. Over the past years, there have been many changes. The size of farm equipment and customer needs have prompted most of these changes. There have been additions and remodeling to the existing buildings and new buildings were constructed. In 2015, the store added a 20,000 square foot building which houses a large service shop and seed business plus storage. There are many more lines of equipment that is carried. Outdoor power equipment also makes up a good portion of the overall business.
Shelly Kennel (daughter of Larry and Nancy) joined the firm in 1985, when Loraine Nichols decided to retire. Scott Eichelberger (son of Larry and Nancy) became part of the business in 1987. Conley Kennel (Shelly's husband) also joined in 2001. Shelly and Conley's sons have both worked here as well as Scott and Jenny's son and two daughters, during the summer and after school. Nick's Farm has been in business for over 57 years and in its 3rd generation of family ownership.
The family at Nick's Farm Store works and lives toward the mission statement of committing to continuing the tradition of providing quality products and services to our valued customers.
